I was spending time in the gym lifting weights and seeing improvement there, but I wanted to do more. I went to see a friend compete in Ironman Wisconsin and the torch was lit. The thought was exciting, but I did not know how to swim, so I took swimming lessons and started to train on foot, bike, and in water. I had to set a goal for myself, so I chose the 70.3 half Ironman triathlon in San Juan on March 19, 2017. I was able to complete the event, but learned later that my swim time was under the requirement, so I did not get an official finishing time. As proud as I was for even finishing the half Ironman distances, I knew that I was capable of more with my eyes opened by my first tri-sport experience. I am now working with coaches in running, cycling, and swimming. I just won a 5 km run. My cycling coach wants me to do a time trial. If I learn how to swim faster, and combine that with my faster running and cycling, I should be ready to try the triathlon again.
I love nature and being outdoors and I’m looking forward to what this racing season has to offer.
